Since I'm leaning towards Cunard for my World Cruise in 2011, I should be upfront and let you know one of the reasons I am leaning this way is because that I am within easy driving distance to the Brooklyn cruise terminal, and, not having to fly with a ton of luggage in tow is one of the factors in this decision. However, I am often dumbfounded by the fact many people refuse to travel to NYC to embark on a cruise. So, let's explore the city that never sleeps and, maybe I can convince one or two of you that a pre-cruise stay in New York City can only enhance your vacation experience.
Hotels
It is a fact that New York is a very expensive place to both visit and live. No one denies this for a moment, however, there are ways around this obstacle without compromising your pocketbook. Let's start with accommodations. Even though I live right here, I often book a hotel for occasions such as birthdays in Manhattan, and, I am not someone that is going to be satisfied with a 2 star hotel. My personal weapon to combat $500 per night hotel rooms for a 4 star hotel experience is Priceline.com and YES it DOES work.
However, I must qualify the Priceline.com experience. It is NOT for everyone. You won't get your money back if you have to cancel. You don't have any say in the room type. Priceline only guarantees it can accommodate two people per room. On the other hand, if you can accept these terms, you can do very well. I have bid on four star hotels in NYC and have been placed in the Sofitel on W. 44th; the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue; and the now closed Drake Hotel which was also on Park Avenue. Not bad, right?
Dining
Then there is the question of expensive dining. True, even McDonalds or Burger King are going average between $6 to $8 per person, you must keep in mind that NYC salaries are much higher than most other areas of the United States and, therefore, that same $6 to $8 here is just like you paying $3 to $5 per person in your home state. It's just a matter of adjusting your mind-set. Some more reasonable places to eat in NYC include:
Cafe Metro - You aren't going to find gourmet cooking here but, if you're looking for a bite on the run without breaking the bank, they make a wonderful substitute for fast food. They have 11 locations in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. And menus can be viewed here by clicking this link: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/cafe-metro/
O'Neil's - If you're looking for pub grub at reasonable prices (by New York standards), O'Neil's is a great choice if you're on the East side. Located on 3rd Avenue between 45th and 46th, it's a touch of Ireland in NYC. And menus can be viewed here by clicking this link: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/oneills/
If you happen to find yourself on the West side and are looking for pub grub, Pig n Whistle will serve you very well. Located on W. 47th between 6th and 7th, the menu can be viewed by clicking this link: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/pig-n-whistle-2/
Looking for a good Italian restaurant that is affordable? Go no further than Basilica. This is a very tiny restaurant on 9th Avenue between 46th and 47th. They have no website but, menus can be viewed here: http://www.menupages.com/restaurants/basilica/ and it is very good Italian. While I highly recommend reservations, don't let that intimidate you! A very generous bowl of Spaghetti Bolognese is just $12 for dinner and, likewise, Eggplant Parmigiana with a side of spaghetti is also just $12 for dinner.
So, as you can see, there are ways to have good to great meals in New York City without spending a fortune to do it. I highly recommend using Menu Pages to help plan your dining experience. Menu Pages offer real reviews and real menus with prices! It can be a lifesaver!
Theater
Let's face it, seeing a show on Broadway is a delight for both locals and visitors alike, however, with ticket prices well over $100 per person, it can be a budget breaker. However, while many people are familiar with TKTS Discount Tickets - which sell day of performance Broadway shows at a discount, far fewer people know about BroadwayBox.com
BroadwayBox.com allows you to purchase your tickets weeks, sometimes months in advance. Not only does this save you from standing online for tickets, your savings can be as high as 50% off the face value.
It's important to note that the most popular shows will often not offer any discount.
Sightseeing
One of the best values for your sightseeing dollars in New York City is the tour buses. They allow hop-on and hop-off options and, they save wear and tear on your feet! Companies such as Gray Lines and City Sights NY are reputable and, offer commentary with experienced tour guides to explain what it is you are viewing. Even as local, I have often enjoyed these tours.
Of course, you can entertain yourself for free by visiting such venues as Macy's or Central Park.
